An accurate ball-and-stick molecular model of trans-cyclooctene (C8H14). The double bond is shown.
trans-Cyclooctene is the smallest cycloalkene in which the trans-isomer is stable at room temperature. Smaller trans-cycloalkenes are unstable due to severe angle strain. Due to its molecular structure and the fact that the chain cannot cross the double bond to the other side, trans-cyclooctene is chiral and cannot interconvert with its mirror image.
Scale: 1mm = 0.25 angstrom. This is a small model.
