A large spherical sculpture. The underlying design is an Islamic geometric pattern derived from Plate 93 of Bourgoin's book Les Éléments de l'Art Arabe. The design is mapped from the plane onto a sphere by turning some of the 12-pointed stars into 10-pointed stars, yielding a final configuration inspired by a truncated icosahedron (i.e., a soccer ball or buckyball). The design is split into two layers that weave through each other in a manner inspired by the work of Rinus Roelofs. As a result, the design can be seen as made up entirely of trefoil knots. The whole thing is realized using wires with spherical cross sections.
